5 top things to do in Toronto
More than just maple syrup and moose, Canada is a hugely popular and diverse country. As Canada Day approaches ever-nearer (1st July, in case you were wondering), we look at one of the country’s top tourist spots: Ontario’s capital Toronto.
If you’re looking to explore the buzz of the country’s busiest city, here are the top five must-do activities on your holiday.
1. Catch some hockey
Canada’s national game is a thrilling bang of swift puck action. The matches are hard-hitting and the goals plentiful. If you get a chance, do not miss a live game.
During the NHL season (October – June) hometown sometime heroes the Maple Leafs will likely have a game going on. Perhaps surprisingly, they’re not the best the country has to offer, but the atmosphere is always electric.
Even if you’ve no game to go to, still check out the Hockey Hall of Fame. Housed in the ornate beauty of the city’s historical architecture (a former bank), it’s a modern, thrilling presentation of everything that goes on in the rink.
2. Head up the CN Tower
The city’s iconic landmark has also become a national monument. A testament to Canadian engineering, and one of the tallest structures in the world, a visit up to the viewing gallery for a bird’s eye gawp across the city should be on every visitor’s to-do list.
Simply strike the pose if you wish, but if you’re feeling braver you can pay for a harness-strapped walk around the edge. A thrilling adrenaline rush and a great photo opportunity, but a good idea to check your travel insurance before signing up!
3. Eat out, Canadian style
Canada’s multi-cultural heritage provides a mouth-watering selection of world-beating treats. In the diverse city of Toronto, there’s a healthy variety of global delicacies to savour. So whilst at Ontario’s skytower city, swing by one of its many eateries for a bite. Your taste buds will be eternally grateful.
Highly recommended is The Canoe Restaurant. Downtown dishes above the flurry of the street, it boasts astonishing views across the city from its 54th floor position; the perfect upmarket meal break from exploration. Cool Canuck charm and a range of seasonal and seafood dishes make this a must for anyone in the area with a rumbling stomach.
4. Take in Niagara Falls
Duck out of the bustle for a few hours and head to the Canadian side of the famous falls for a breathtaking day of natural beauty. Either by arranged tour or private car hire, it’s a day trip that you’ll not regret. The three falls are an overwhelming spectacle that you’ll need several hours to fully absorb. As a bonus, even the journey there is a delightful trip through the majestic splendour of the country’s vineyards and greenery.
5. Go back in time
Wind back the clock over a century by taking a trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village. A recreation of a Canadian settlement village from 1867 with working mill, blacksmiths and battle re-enactments, Black Creek takes the visitor back to the pioneering time of Ontario’s early days. Discard your mobile and modern clothes and pretend you’ve landed by TARDIS in another time zone altogether while absorbing Canada’s fascinating history.
What are you waiting for?
Whatever you decide to get up to in Toronto, you’ll never be stuck for something to do. All tourists require an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) to visit Canada, so make sure you get this arranged before booking your day trips! And don’t forget to get yourself, your holiday and your baggage insured before you leave the country.
Have a great holiday!
